Trailer title

I was given a 14 boat and I have the boat registration. The owner could not find the trailer title. It does have a life time tag on the trailer. I could get the title, but it a full day trip to the local DMV dept. and another to go see the original owner. Is there really a need to have the trailer title when it will never need new tags?

Here in CA, for a PTI without a title, all you'll need is a bill of sale from the seller.

ask the previous owner to apply for duplicate title. then you can transfer. technically, as long as the title is in his name, he is liable for any damage it may do. even though the tow vehicle, insurance usually covers the trailer.
