Will someone please explain what the j designates in wheel size nomenclature. (i.e. 14X6j) Is this type wheel suitable for boat trailer use?

tbird, welcome to iboats.

I give up in trying to figure out the j rating. Doing a goggle search I found solid trailer tires and rims both with that 14x6j designation. I have also found that the j is either a load rating equivalent to an 18 ply tire or a rating meaning not to exceed 100 km/hr.

If I were guessing I would think this tire is a solid core tire with a 100 km/hr rating for a cart trailer. But that is a guess based on one I found for sell. Someone will know more then me. My next thread show you what I a use to in trailer tires.

Look for a front code like "ST" to designate trailer tire.

"An optional letter (or letters) indicating the intended use or vehicle class for the tire:

* P: Passenger Car
* LT: Light Truck
* ST: Special Trailer
* T: Temporary (restricted usage for "Space-Saver" spare wheels)

There is another thread here asking the same question. The J is the specification for the bead area of the wheel. There are many designations but J is the common wheel spec for vehicle and trailer tires. And yes -- trailer wheels may also be marked with a J. 14x6J merely means its a 14 inch wheel that accepts 14 inch tires, it is six inches in width and the J is the bead area spec for the wheel.
