hi

i want to change out the wire winch cable on my boat trailer to a strap (seat belt stuff) style.

i have bought the appropriate strap but there are no mounting instructions, at the winch drum end the belt is doubled back on its self and stitched so i have a bunch of options

i could get a piece of metal 50 mm long and place in the loop and pop rivet through the lot into the drum, or i could get a bolt and drill holes in the sides of the drum and stick it through, although i,m not sure that the drum comes out of the frame to allow this.

what have others done who have gone down this path???

Drill two holes from side to side (across the drum) and use a bolt and nut through the loop on the strap. I doubt if you have to take the winch apart to do this

Re: trailer winch strap advice

ok call me a goose, that was way to easy, get rid of the old wire cable, knock out the pin holding the drum to the shaft.

remove shaft from assembly, remove drum

feed the looped end of the new strap through the slot in the inner drum, refit drum to frame push shaft back through,
making sure the shaft actually goes through the loop, knock retaining pin back into place.

apply tension so strap and crank it onto the drum, took me 5 minutes, that was way to easy, took me longer worrying about how it would work than actually doing it, isn't that always the way

no more stabbed fingers
woohoo

So you grabbed a beer and studied it a little. ;) Glad it worked out and no more stabbing pains in your fingers and hands.
