Some of our trailering disaster stories may spook the OP. Good info in this thread. Be prepared, plan ahead, and enjoy picking up your boat.

Md, to NY? Piece of cake... I towed my 7,000 lb rig with an F150 4x4 from Ft. Meyers FL to NY, in Feb a few years ago. Brand new tires 1/2 hour after picking up boat, grease bearings, check all lights and brakes and off we went. Was a perfect tow, until an unpredicted snow storm hit as soon as we crossed into NJ. Was supposed to be just rain. 160 miles of snow storm. Argh....

Your tires may just about be at the end of thier service life, at 4 years old, but maybe not. Just check real close for any dry rot and keep the pressures at the sidwall max rating. As others have said, good tires, a spare, bearings, lights and brakes are what you need to check on trailer, and have sufficient equipment with you to tend to road side problems. (Boat US Trailering insurance a BIG plus, too) Just take your time and be careful / aware of everything and stop often to check everything out (easy to do since gas milage on your tow vehicle will drop like a rock with the boat back there) and you'll be fine. Since the boat isn't too big, should be easy, but your V-6 Explorer is is a little on the smallish side, so just take it nice and easy.

One suggestion: if you have an IR thermal gun, bring it along and check bearing / hub temps with every stop. That'll tell you if you have a bearing heating up. Or just feel each hub for anything excessively warm.

I would wait until the roads are dry or you will have sand, salt, road grime all over your boat and trailer.

Sand, salt and grime will wash right off. I'd be more concerned with the traction / other people on the road.....

I've been towing for 7 years and feel pretty good about this one. 400 miles isn't bad but it's the longest for me so I'd like to be as prepared as possible. The spare hub is a good idea, I have everything else and can handle the work myself. I'll have my credit card in case I need it but I'm not that worried as long as the road conditions aren't bad.

The gal that's coming along is a good friend and not afraid to help, she just talks too damn much. LOL

Books on CD from the library are great for road trips.

wouldn't be a bad idea to mark off a few locations of walmarts and auto stores nearby along the route just in case you need to buy a spare tire or something else for repairs along the way, just in case you have multiple failures of more then one item. knowing how far you need to roll on a flat tire or leave the trailer and make a quick run for parts without it can be very useful info sometimes.

After about half an hour, pull over some place safe and walk around and do a good visual inspection...also put your bare hand on each hub and each tire to check the temp...Anything warmer than the others indicates low inflation in tires or bearing or brake problems. Do this on both the tow vehicle and trailer...Good Luck!

My two cents after all the good advice is to carry a 2X10 or 2X12 long enough to support your jack on soft ground. Saved me big time on one occasion. Good Luck!

Thx again for all the ideas and suggestions. I plan on using many of them from frequent stops in the beginning to having roadside repair essentials.
Everything is looking good for the 4th and hopefully the weather gives me a break!
