Don't know about other brands, but Yamaha specifically says do not trailer with motor trimmed up. If I trailer my Yamaha full down, my skeg would drag. Solution is a Yamaha "wedge" that is simply a hard rubber (or some other composition) tube that slips over one of the two trim pistons, after which you lower the motor so it rests on the wedge. Works great with motor trimmed about 45 degrees.

the wedge or similar device is the best thing if you aren't comfortable with the tilt latch; it keeps all the movement at the place it's designed for--the transom and motor bracket.
