Re: Tranny Fluid For Fogging Oil??

Ayuh,....

It really doesn't Matter Charlie,...

The Idea is to coat the cylinder with Oil of some form to lesson the chance of it Rusting....

Gear Oil would work Great, but it's pretty much Got to be intro'ed thru the sparkplug holes...
Diesel Fuel, while definitely Not the Best,... Is better than Nothing....(just 1 of the reasons diesels Aren't fogged)
I'd think that ATF would be my Last choice, as it's about a 5W or 10W oil, At Best....

Grease would no doubt be the Best,... But it's hard to get where you need it,..

ATF would smoke a lot and make you think it was better than fogging oil, but wouldn't coat things or last very long. There are probably thousands of engines that NEVER see any kind of fogging oil that still run. Maybe not as good because every year a light layer of rust may degrade the cylinder walls, who knows.

Outboard oil (TCW3) is what Volvo uses in place of fogging oil. It just sticks on the parts and lasts longer than regular oil.

I will stick with what works for me.fogging oil in my left hand and a dose of Marvel mystery oil to stall it in my right hand.

look at it this way charlie.... fogging oil, by design, is formulated to STICK to metal...... mystery oil.... is not designed to stick.

I have never been able to figure out why there are some that think MMO is so special. It's just a solvent/oil mix. Not something I would put in the oil, gas or in the cyls.

This is not electrical engineering....

Just use a marine fogging oil according to the manufacturers instructions.

I believe you would stand alone in that opinion.Charlie

Well, I don't think I'm "alone" as you say....there's at least one company (Lycoming) and maybe the FAA (which would absolutely would take certificate action against a pilot and/or mechanic for using it in aviation gasoline........ they might agree that MMO is not the best thing in gasoline.......There is NO engine manufacturer today that would warrant a new engine for an oil related failure if they knew the owner put MMO in the crankcase. (and I'll bet they would test for additives)

I'll say it again, I don't know why some think that MMO (which according to the FAA is "74 percent mineral oil, 25 percent stoddard solvent, and 1 percent lard.") Is so good in oil , fuel, or cyls.

It's probably great in air tools.......but then just about any oil works in air tools....

This is beginning to smell like an "oil thread" I have to stop! I said I wouldn't do this anymore!;)

When i was in the service [ that was when Noah built the arc] in aviation mechanical school they showed us a film on oil.

Did a break down on mmo.

I's nothing but what Ht just posted.

Btw i use a squirt of wd 40 before i use my compressor tools.

If your gonna fog why not use fogging oil?

It's like a no-brainer.

You said it best: "Stick with what works for me".

As others have stated, trans fluid would work but it may not "stick" to surfaces like one would want for engine storage etc.. Maybe it does stick however, and that's why the individual you spoke to swears by it - one never knows.
I too use MMO and fogging oil placed/poured in my boats "fuel filter" to help with the injection system preservation during winterization. I then kill the engine and fog each cylinder twice (with dedicated fogging oil), with rotation between each application. I then change the filter in the spring and stoke her up.

As for the men above, no one here said anything about running MMO in the crankcase nor in the "gas tank". :) Sure the MMO instructions say you can but that was not part of the topic.
Everyone I know (that uses MMO) however, swears by it when it comes to preservation and or storing engines/mechanical "stuff". Does this imply that it's the best thing known to man? No, just that numerous individuals find the product helpful for their application. Like CAPTJason, I too use it for pre/post air tool use etc., - and several of my impact guns/wrenches are near 25 years old and still have the torque they did as new. That's actually when/where I was introduced to MMO. :) Good stuff for that type of use.

I say stick with what you're doing Crazy Charlie! :D

Cheers
