hey all,

I've got a 68 Evinrude triumph 55hp and when testing the engine, I noticed the propeller shaft spun even though the motor was in neutral. I tried shifting into reverse and there was no change. I should mention that the controls on this particular motor are of a "Push button" variety. You push a button for forward, one for neutral and one for reverse. It's something I've never seen before. If anyone could give me advice on how to proceed, i'd appreciate it.

thanks everyone

Re: tranny problems

It's an electrically controlled lower unit. Johnson and Evinrude used them around the late 60's. If allowed to default it will stay in forward gear.

Upon activating one of the electrical solenoids in the lower unit it will change to nuetral or reverse. (not sure exactly which one first) Then as both solenoids become energised it finds the other gear position. Be it reverse or nuetral.

Apparently it is very important to use the right oils in the lower unit as it has to run through an internal pump arangement that activates the gears within.

It has been noted here that the switch can quite often go bad and need replacing.

If you are going to want to work on this yourself it will be best to find a manual.

Some shops and boat mechanics will shy away from even helping you out as they may not be trained in something of that age.

If you can be more specific with what it's not doing right, you might find some people here quite knowlegable (not me) about these.

try doing a search through the threads here with the term(s)

Electric shift

shift solenoid

shift switch

You should be able to turn up something.

Re: tranny problems

You will find 2 wires coming up from the leg (port side) a green and blue. With key on, while selecting gears, check for:

>neutral = power to green wire
>reverse = power to green and blue
>forward = no power to either

If you find no power to either, check the blocking diode, switch or related wiring.

If you have the appropriate power when the push button selector is selected, and it doesn't shift, its a leg problem (gummed up, bad solenoids, stuck links)
*this leg requires "type C" gear oil!! :)
