i have a humminbird 561DI fish finder.... 1 day i went to my boat and some squirrel chewed up some of my wiring in my boat:mad:
I managed to repair the rest of the wires except 1... THE TRANSDUCER CABLE!!!!
Since my boat sits on the mud at low tide the cable was chewed just above the transducer itself!!!
it wasn't all the way through mainly the black casing.

now my transducer doesn't work. i don't want to spend $100+ dollars on a new one.:frusty: :help:

any help will be appreciated:D:D

:help:

Perhaps it would be a good idea to replace the transducer with an in-hull or through-hull model. Is that an option?

I can't do a through hull transducer b/c it's on a 14ft aluminum Jon boat. Plus theirs no good mounting spot for one.

Is their any way I can take apart the transducer itself??? I'm really good at soldiering in all areas. Small or big doesn't matter

Since the signal frequency is 200kHz or less, coax isn't necessary. Probably just a plastic outer cover, a braid for the return line which is also a shield from interference and then an insulated center conductor with the signal on it. More than likely you won't recover with it being chewed right at the transducer. It apparently broke the center conductor.

Funny on that problem. I bought a new truck in 2011 and so far the squirrels have cost me $250 in chewing up my wiring....warranty doesn't cover squirrel damage. I don't want to shoot the squirrel(s) so I moved the truck and now it's a nice long walk to get to it, but it's good exercise. Course, if it happens again, a pot of squirrel stew may be on the menu.

I don't know if inboard will help you on that or not. My ducer is inboard on my boat and works great there but my boat is locked in my shop.

$100 for a transducer? I bought one from The GPS Store ( thegpsstore.com ) in Ocean Isle Beach NC for a Lowrance LCX 28C HD for $65. Wish you luck on a repair if you try.

Comparing apples to apples?

Like anything else, they make everything from junk to state of the art transducers. To put the $100 price tag into perspective, the GPS Store has my transducer for $779.

Get the new one, mount it to an easily removable bracket so ya can lay it inside the boat when not in use.

Send it back to the factory, they will give you an estimate for the repair or they may even replace it for free. I have sent back many things to factory rods, reels, sunglasses, etc. and they have replaced most of my returned items free. You will get a refurbished one but it works!

I would be getting a new plan to rid your boat of the perps that ruined your electronics before installing a new one! Moth balls or just remove the darn thing when not using it.
I agree that I would send it back to the factory, many times they will replace or repair, and usually for little or nothing.

Re: Transducer Cable Chewed Up!!!

I'll try contacting Humminbird about the transducer... it's under warranty [but i doubt it covers squirrel damage] LOL...

this is the most strange chew area I've ever! the squirrels have to go down on the mud off the dock [ A good 18 inches ]. the mud is like quick sand... I'm 5 Ft 10 In and i had to jump in it cause my boat slid down the bank sank to my lower chest and i did not even hit bottom.

lately the squirrels have been chewing my propane lines... 5 hoses later... i heard that if you put aluminum/tin foil on the lines or wire they wont touch it at all and its true 2 months so far without a chewed hose.

taking the transducer off when not in use is a hard for me because i have such a low transom and fear of making it leak is worth the chewed cable.

here is my boat photo (1).jpg

What about using some brake line as conduit?
