My 1992 Ranger 391V has a step pad. Do I need to mount the transducer for my new humminbird 787c2 on the step next to the drain hole? Or can I place it over on the starboard side above the step? Need some help. I really do not understand where to place this thing.

Re: Transducer Question

I think the best installation in terms of performance and clean looks would be a thru-hull, and your boat may already have one installed.
If the thru-hull is not an option then you need to place the transducer so 1. it is not in front of the engine where air bubbles can cause the prop to ventilate and 2. it needs to be somewhere it will be completely underwater (and away from chines/strakes and other things that disturb the smooth flow of water) when the boat is on plane if you intend on using at high speed.
If you could post a pic of the back of the boat it would be easier to determine a good location.

Hope that helps.

Re: Transducer Question

Transducer must be in undisturbed water for it to work.
As low as possible usually works the best.

Re: Transducer Question

I just moved mine inboard on a 3 step padded alum boat. I mounted it as close to the keel (center support rib) as I could, and about 2" in front of the transom. You can see by my Avatar snapshot that when I am hooked up, I am running on the last step only and to mount it on the second landing would be right in the spray and would be jammed with interference.

The last time I did this I used epoxy and got a good hard set. This time I used some kind of adhesive in a tube (one part, not 2 part like epoxy) and being winter time and all, maybe the stuff was old, it didn't setup hard. It's firm (crease it with your fingernail), but not hard.

The result is that on my $99 Eagle Cuda 168, the bottom comes in great at high speed, and the interference is much less than when it was transom mounted, but the little fish are a little smeared. Slowing down the sweep rate helps. The fish are there and discernable, just a little bit smeared (fuzzy).

May be the "soft" adhesive, may be something else, like temperature....it was cold, when I tested it.

Just wanted you to know, but it's a lot better than when it was over the side............and I don't have the rooster tail I used to have from it.
