hello folks I'm posting a thread for a friend that has asked me for help, He has a 18ft mastercraft, with a 351motor, this boat has a tranny, and not a standard outdrive, the front seal is leaking on the tranny, he can get the tranny out, without having to pull the motor, after replacing the seal, can he just bolt it back in, or does he need some kind of alingment tool like the sterndrive???

Re: transmission seal

There is nothing to align, the transmission mounts solidly to the engine. The only thing that would be aligned would be the engine to propshoaft.

Thanks Don, one more question for you, is that seal pressed in, or just the rubber malet type?? I guess that the only way to explain my question ha ha

Re: transmission seal

Just a note to prevent having to do it twice. Sometimes the shaft has a groove cut in it from the seal or pitted by rust and a new seal will not last. I would install a Speedy Sleeve, which is a stainless steel sleeve that is pressed on the shaft to provide a new sealing surface. They can be found at most industral bearing supply houses. He will have to mike the shaft to get the right size.
