Transmission whine??? WTF???

coming home Red made a weird noise, a whine right around 2700 before it would shift<br /><br />i didnt think to hold it in gear at that RPM to see if the whine persisted<br /><br />it also makes a slight shudder from dead stop, something I attributed to the jackshaft set up, its a two piece driveshaft<br /><br />Guess I better get it into the shop, grrrrr, I was going to tow a boat with it this weekend too, before the deal is gone and I lose the trailer, course, if they have to fix it ANYWAY ... but I dont want to put a hitch on or a ball on before I get that tranny fixed<br /><br />I just hope it makes the noise when the mechanic checks it out, I wonder if I should take a tape recorder with me or a VCR to record the rpm when it makes that sound<br /><br />its annoying, this is the same trans (4L60E)they use with the much more powerful 4.3 vortec, I figured it would last virually forever behind the mighty 2.2<br /><br />maybe I can get a silverado loaner, lol<br /><br />eh, Ill settle for a colorado, Ill run it down to hatteras or someplace, lolol, take a head boat out to the gulfstream<br /><br />a thousand miles??? in a WEEKEND??<br /><br />hey, ya caught me on a runnin weekend!<br /><br />

Its the sway bars Ray. The Little Red Truck is rejecting them. Must not have the anti-rejection meds just right. Perhaps adding some 4.xx gears to the rearend will help.

Ray,<br />The shudder in an automatic tranny would be caused by slipping clutches. Usually this is due to either the tranny oil breaking down or some sort of excessive wear. If for any reason this tranny has been run hot or at elevated temp levels, that could break down the oil and score the clutches.<br /><br />My Suburban has about 50,000 miles on a rebuilt tranny and it sometimes shudders when backing up. The shop said that it is the reverse clutches slippping. In my case, all of the forward clutches are fine and they said that I should get at least another 40,000 miles out of it.<br /><br />Also, be sure to check you fluid level. If it is low, it could cause the clutch to slip. If it stays low, a rebuild will be near. I hoep this helps the prognosis and you get it fixed soon.<br /><br />Knightgang

its shifting fine tho DJ, I think its cold related, but it still shouldnt be making the noise, Im more concerned that the thing WONT make the noise, maybe I should take a video cam of it with sound, focus on the tach<br /><br />tonight, no whine, but the motor seemed louder, almost like piston slap,

Don't know if this would pertain to your truck Ray, but I drive a Ford service van. At 55mph the van would shudder and whine like you was describing.It is okay at other speeds. It turned out to be the torque converter. Something about hard take offs can bend parts inside the converter. (neutral drops can cause it) Just a thought for you. <br /><br />Good Luck...
