The hull is sprayed. gel coat sucks. I gave up on the air gun since it was only spraying 1 mil thick so I went to the wagner. 3 coats of 11 mil thickness. After every quart of gelcoat I have to take the gun apart and clean it thoroghly. I sprayed about 3 gallons so that was a ton of cleaning. on my final quart it kicked in the gun so I have massive orange peel everywhere. I dont know if there is any hope for cleaning the gun. I will find out tomorrow. 5 hours of spraying and I am beat. I will get some pics on tomorrow.

sorry to hear you had a rough time with it, it bet it is yellow! Hopefully the orange peel will come out with some wet sanding.

Last night was a long one. It was 7 hours not 5, must have been the fumes. I have alot of sanding to do now. First I have to wash the pva off, then 400 grit, down to 1500 and buff it out. This is the time consuming part but very rewarding to see the shine come out.

Here is some of the mess from cleaning the gun and measuring out gelcoat.

SKIBUM1M,
Sorry to hear you had so many problems. I can see some of the orange peel in a few of your pic's. Hopefully it will sand out and shine like a new penny. I'll bet it will be as hard as nails and last forever.
It should be great when you are finished.
If I could, I would come and help.
Keep up the great work
Bob

Re: transom and floor replacement

Yes it is St sanding day didnt everyone get the memo. I am actually starting by using the DA to get thru the orangepeel. when the gelcoat all turns the same color then I change to 400 and finer. The orangepeel is so deep there is no point in hand sanding till I hit the low point of it.

So this is what the gelcoat starts out looking like. Just like the antiskid areas on the boat.

This is after using the DA

This is buffed, but it does have sanding scratches in it because I dont have all the grits of paper I need yet so this is skipping from 400 to 2000 then buff.

anopther pic of the buffed area.

Looks really good. That buffed area is like a piece of glass. That's going to be beautiful.

I can see it now.. what's your boat look like? It's the only YELLOW one on the lake! You can't miss it!

Good job. and Good luck with the sanding, maybe it won't take too much.

Re: transom and floor replacement

I got about 3 feet of the back end sanded to 400 tonight. getting to the bottom of the pits in the gelcoat is the tough part since the surface is about the same as blacktop when I start. This is slow going but very rewarding when you clean it off and see it shine. I cant wait to get it all done so I can flip it and spray the cap. I think I have saved the wagner spray gun. I have been chipping gelcoat out of it and I have all the passages opened up. I may see if they sell parts for it still because I heard the new ones suck.

Nice work skibum! I'm pretty sure they sell parts on the Wagner website.
Can't wait to see the shine come out!
