Thank you Bob, it is harder on me than I ever expected. I dont know how single parents do it. so far she is still stateside but her life will be hell soon. I am hoping she stays in the US as long as possible because this is counting toward her year long deployment. The less time in Afghanistan the better.

Yes Micks, Ondarvr is an absolute wealth of info when it comes to gelcoat and fiberglass. I started a new thread because I am ordering gelcoat tomorrow and wanted to make sure I some responses in time. He actually saved me money because the duratec was more than gelcoat and it would not have been as good as using streight gelcoat. Now to figure out if I should order 2 gallons or a 5 gallon bucket. 5 gallons cost less than 4 single gallons and would allow for alot of practice and screw ups. 2 gallons is a random guess of what I need but would probably have to get more for the top. My problem is what do I do with any leftover? Its not like I have anything else to use it on. And it doesnt keep long term. I guess I need to go measure the boat the best I can to figure out approximately how many square feet it is going to take.

The bottom is about 150 square feet. I would guess the top is about 70 and the transom at 12. So at 80 square feet a gallon I would say 3 gallons so I might as well go with the 5 gallon for $60 more. Then next week I can get the gun and mold release locally and hopefully start shooting. I will make sure to document it well. Woo hoo I will be back on the boat in a week!!!

I just ordered 5 gallons of yellow gelcoat!!!! Progress !!! It cost $315 all together including hazardous shipping and mekp and will be here next Thursday. I cant wait to start spraying.

I go in detail why I chose gelcoat in the other thread. I cant wait to do some progress on it. Gelcoating will be a pretty quick process but the sanding and buffing will take alot of time.

Thanks Bob, I have been reading this one http://www.ccponline.com/products/products_cookbook.html The more info the better so I will read that too. When I wanted to learn how to paint a car I bought 3 books on it and read every website I could. They say if you read 3 books on a subject it makes you an expert. Not that I am an expert on painting cars now but With sanding and buffing I can make a car look damn good.

I finally dug the boat out from under christmass boxes. I burned alot of the boxes to keep warm. The hull was pretty dirty from being outside so I sanded the whole thing again just to make sure it was clean and ready. I will take some pics tomorrow to show all the scratches I filled. I am getting real excited about the gelcoat. I went by the paint store and checked to make sure they had my new gun and plenty of PVA in stock for wednesday. They have been great about giving advice on everything. When I started painting cars they answered a ton of questions and have done the same about gelcoat.

Ok this is a rather dull post but took alot of time to get to this point. These are pics of all the filling and sanding to get the hull smooth and ready for gelcoat. All the blue and tan are filler.

According to UPS tracking the gelcoat will be here friday. The company didnt have enough color additive so it delayed it a day. Tonight I wiped the hull down with acetone. On wednesday I will wipe it down with wax and grease remover. then just before spraying I will wipe it down with tack cloth. This will give the solvents plenty of time to evaporate and make sure that all impuritys are gone. It sounds like gelcoat is much more forgiving than auto paint but I figure Better to overdo it than to have fisheyes.
On a sidenote My explorer started running like crap yesterday so I scanned the computer and found a cylinder 4 misfire. Tried wires and that didnt help so I tried a plug today and for $3 I fixed it.

I will definitly post alot on the gelcoat. I dont know if I am overlooking something that makes it alot harder but it seems that Oops is the only thread I have seen on here that did gelcoat that came out good and if I recall his had to be done twice. Granted spraying is an art but I am sure I am not the only one on here that has some ability to spray paint on a car. I dont see very much difference at this point. I did spray the transom with white and it seemed to come out perfect so I am hoping the whole boat comes out that good. If it is just fear of not knowing that is keeping others from gelcoating I hope I can Show everything that is involved and others can learn from what I will.
