Anyone ever replaced the transom gasket? Can I just use a good strong sealant instead? Where do I find information on this procedure?

Transom Gasket on WHAT ? ? ? ? ? ?
And YES, it's been done before.
Basically, anything you pull the transom shield off of, gets a new gasket, seal, or whatever it's called for your particular make and model and year of drive.

Just did one recently. Not that bad if you can pull the motor and drive and shield but that is a Volvo. What you got?

Well,.........

If by chance you could type a few lines,+ Explain exactly What's going on with your Alpha,......
Along with the Year,... And as much Info as you Have,.......
Alphas have been around for Over 20 Years,+ there Have been Changes.......

Maybe,..... Just Maybe somebody around here can give you the Info you Need.............

Ya Know,....... Like Did it Just start Leaking,..??.....
From WHERE,..??... Exactly Where,..??....

Basically,..........
The Transom Assembley goes on with a Dry Gasket,.......

Usually,...... IF it's Leaking,.....It's Usually just an Indicater that Something Much More Serious is Actually the underlying Issue.........

Re: transom gasket

sorry...I'll explain in more detail. I had water coming into boat(1987 glastron) So I had all bellows and gimble bearing replaced. Took it out yesterday and noticed water was still coming in . Pulled boat out of water and let water leak out through hull. It was coming from the base of the sterndrive housing on the left bottom, where the stud goes through. It could even be leaking around stud..couldn't tell. I don't want to have to pull anything else off this money pit and I was hoping to seal the leak with a good silicone or something. Do the bolts that hold the sterdrive housing on screw in from the inside? I thought if could loosen them I good get a bead of silicone behind it ...Picker

Re: transom gasket

Both of the 2 bottom Studs are Aluminum,...... The 1s with the Anode in the end...........

Being a 1987 boat,.......
My Guesses are;
Either the Studs have Corroded to Dust,.........
Or,...
The Bottom of the Transom is Rotten,+ Collapsing, causing the Looseness..........

Boogering it up as you say you'd Like to do,..... Is a Step in the Wrong direction........

IF My guesses Are Right,.......
Your drive will be Out of Alignment,+ Things are going to start Breaking,.........
And it's Very Expensive Things that'll be doing the Breaking..................

And,.......... Yes,... Everything is Bolted from the Inside of the Transom..........

Re: transom gasket

As bond-o says, the aluminum bolts will corrode, as will the lower part of the inner transom plate. If that area has been exposed to water, often it will seep into those boltholes and wick into the wood in the transom, causing delamination and general sogginess - not a good thing. A leaky transom seal can let a fairly good quantity of water into the boat - nothing to play around with if you like to do your boating on the water rather than under it - a bead of silicone won't do. You will need to replace the transom seal, and have the transom checked with a moisture meter if there is any indication of water damage. Any such damage needs to be addressed before remounting the gimbal housing to the boat.
