Well bought my first boat the other day......used 23' Robalo with dual 150 outboards.

Picking it up this week and had a question.... When in Walmat today I saw something called "transom savers" for securing the lower unit of the outboards to the rollers of the trailer for transport. I will be trailering this boat of course when I pick it up and for the first season at least. Is this a definite must have?

Re: Transom Rods during transport

Transom savers do just that....they save your transom from the stress that outboards put on them during transport. It distributes the weight between the transom and the trailer frame. You don't want to transport those motors in a completely vertical position because you'll likely bounce the skeg off of the road or while leaving a parking lot.

As for the transom saver, it should be mounted to the trailer frame that supports the rollers....not to the tiny rods that hold the rollers themselves.

I don't know what they are selling at walmart, but to me the cats meow of transom savers are the ones that twist into the mounting bracket on the frame. That way you can insert and remove the transom rod without having to crawl underneath your boat. The first transom saver that I ever had required me to crawl under the boat to secure the transom saver rod with a cotter pin. Now I can just stand at the rear of the boat, rotate the transom saver rod 180 degrees, and it's locked into place.

These savers are great for the $. Right around $25. They have a pin that allows you to take the saver "arm" off and toss it into the back of the truck after unloading.

Transom Saver is a real good item to keep your motor from bouncing or flopping around on the transom as you trailer it over bumps in the road. It saves wear and tear on your motor bracket, steering, boat transom, etc. Those motors could be 475 to 500 lbs each! Buy them and use them. Good Luck!:)
