Re: Transom supports

Hey thanks guys, I'll need to do some research on which kind of fibreglass system to use. ksmith, your build looks good too. I cant believe that tubed carport held that body up. Did it stay there long?? I was wondering where most of the wires were housed and that photo alone answered it. I was so worried about popping the top and ripping out wires etc... I guess once you do one or really get into the project more the paranoia wears off some? I didnt make much progress yesterday but hope to get more done today.

Re: Transom supports

The good news is, I finally got the Merc 150 off of the boat. The transom looks as if it was re-done fairly recently. It also looks as if it was done with the seacast. Does that stuff dry to a dark pink color??
Bigred, did you suggest beefing the transom up 1/2 an inch?? It measures 2" thru the engine mount holes from skin to skin. Should I add 1/2"??
The bad news is, whoever re-worked the transom, cut the stringers back 10" then patched them back in. Trouble is, they did not wrap around the flow holes in the bilge area which led to the stringers soaking up water and gas it smells like. The other problem was whoever owned the boat had stuffed some blocks down either side of the gas tank (I imagine to stop it from shifting) trouble is, this is the main cause of the supports cracking.
After the fibreglass is complete, is there any certain paint that you guys suggest to help protect it with??

I've never used Seacast so I can't help you with that.

Sorry, I was talking about beefing up the knee supports. As long as they get tied in good to the stringers, patching them in shouldn't be a bad idea.

I'm going to paint my bilge area with Bilgekote from Interlux when I get to that point.

Again, Wobely, get us some pics so we can see what you see. Text is good, but like they say, a pic is worth a 1000 words. If your transom is SeaCast and it sounds like it is then it should be good to go your stringers can be re worked just need pics to determine the correct method to use. get em posted so we can help

Re: Transom supports

I was checking out uscomposites.com today. Which system would you guys suggest? Im thinking maybe the medium would work best, but thick or thin? I'll probably get the two gallon kit but what else do I need to make the PB??? Do I need wood flour and micro balloons, and finally, what do I mix to make the pl adhesive you guys keep reffering to?? Is it really just the same resin??

Wobely,

PL adhesive is purchased at Lowe's or HD in the Caulking section.
to make Peanut Butter check out OOPS post on Page 76 It's all there.

Medium would work GREAT for you! Buy the Resin Pumps too! Makes measuring a cinch!!! Get a good respirator a Lowe's $30.00

Re: Transom supports

Hi Guys,
Its beena while but I have finished my fiberglass project. I decided to add an extra 1/2 inch to the transom and all went well. I was planning to post photos but unfortunately my computer went south and I cannot seem to retieve my desktop photos when I plug my hard drive into another computer. I just get an error message telling me I cannot access. I will keep trying. My boat has been in the water for three weeks now and is very strong and water tight. Thanks for all your input. Paul.
