I've put it off long enough. I've been reading threads on this site and I still have questions about this job. So far, i got the engine off and the splashwell out with little difficulty. I just started removing the old transom and, as you can see, it's soaked. Also, it was only 1" thick. I'm going to sandwich two pieces of 3/4 plywood. Is it necessary to let the plywood dry before I fabricate the transom? Also, any suggestions about removing that old transom? Currently, I'm using a large screwdrider and a hammer. Oh yeah, my boat is a 1963 Dorsett Skibird, 14'. It has a 50hp Seaking(Chrysler) outboard. Thanks for all the great info.

Re: Transom Time

Hi jc1957, Yes it is necessary to let the plywood dry I used plywood for my stringers, I cheeted a little, I bought it at lowes where all there wood is stored indoors so it was pretty dry to begin with. As far as removing the transom, I used a chain saw to remove the majority of the wood, before removing the fiberglass skin. I then used a very sharp 4" wide wood chisel to remove the remainder. After that a flapper sanding wheel.
That might sound like alot, but all in all it took about 2-3 hrs

Good luck with your project
