Replacing wood on transom on a valco bayrunner
Can I use 2" thick oak

Depends on the oak. Most oak for marine use needs to be boiled or it will rot away fast. Why not use plywood? It usually lasts 20+ years.

Can you use it...yes...is it the best product....not really.

Plywood is the product of choice.

I agree, OAK is NOT the wood to use on your boat. Ext Grade Ply wood is constructed with Waterproof glue and IF you use poly or epoxy resin along with Fiberglass mat AND you maintain it properly it will last longer than you will want the boat. I have a 50 year old runabout with a plywood transom with NO ROT. Use the Plywood!

When you mention Ext Grade Ply wood is that a hard wood ply or soft wood ply as there are many different types of Ext grade ply?

Exterior Grade Plywood that you purchase at Lowe's or Home Depot is just fine. If you need 2" then Use two 3/4 inch pieces with a 3/8 in piece sandwiched. with the mat and resin you'll come out just about exactly 2". You also might want to check out MDO or HDO plywood. Really quality stuff and saves on resin.
