Trash in my system maybe?

Hello all. I just purchased a used 96 model carolina skiff with a 96, 55 suzuki and I seem to have a problem with constant water flow out of the pee hole. I first ran the boat a 1/2 mile or so and notice that the pee hole stoped running water so I stopped and took a wire hanger and released a few grains of sand and it began pumping once more. I did this a couple of times with the same results each time. I then decided to load the boat and take it home until I could flush it and replace the water impeller for fear of a bad impeller and trash in the system. I removed the foot and changed out the impeller (which did needed changing) and cranked the motor. At first it pumped water out the pee hole great and eventually quit to nothing more than a drip. I then shut the motor off and turned it back on and it pumped strong again. It did the same thing again and I shut it down and cranked it back up and it pumped strong. I may have fixed the problem but I won't know until I take it to the water again and put it under a load. What do you folks think? Sand in the system or something failing? I didn't see any more sand.

I have removed the cover of the thermostat and guess what! The thermostat has completely disentigrated. I got a new one and replaced it and now it will push water out the tell tail great. One question though. Before I found the thermostat had been eaten away I was running the boat and the temp alarm went off and I had to be towed back to the dock and I loaded the boat and pulled the water temp sensor off the power head and it has almost melted. Does anyone think I may have some permanent damage to the motor? It seems to run great on the ear muffs since I replaced the thermostat but I haven't put it back in the water yet.

The compression test proved that the middle cylinder is bad. After pulling the head cover I found that the center piston has a piece of metal about a quarter of an inch missing from the side where the exhaust exits the cylinder wall. The compression checked 120 top, 60 middle, 110 bottom. I don't know what caused this to happen but I am going to rebuild the darn thing. Lesson learned, do not buy a used boat without checking the compression first, and if the current owner won't let you, then you don't want the boat because he has something to hide. If anyone knows what may have happened please feel free to comment.
