Triger wheel or switch box

Ok I have a 85 h.p. 1974 mercury outboard with a thunderbolt ignition. It dose not get spark. I have replaced the wiring harness in the motor and the one going to the control box (wire rote). I did all the test in the book with no luck. I shorted out the wires on the switch box from the Distributor (black and brown) while still connected to the switch box and with the plug out and grounded with out turning the motor over, I have spark. Now it will start fine for about a day just by turning the key, then no spark. Short it out and then I have spark. Is it a bad trigger wheel or bad switch box? If bad trigger wheel how do I change it out.

Sounds like a bad trigger. To replace you have to remove the flywheel, unbolt and remove the distributor, disassemble the distributor and replace the entire housing assy because the trigger is an integral part of the housing.<br /><br />The only other alternative would be to find a good, used, clean distributor assy and replace as a unit. But you'd have to find one with good bearings, and little or no corrosion on the trigger assy. Most used ones are probably ready to fail anyway. The new trigger housing assy isn't cheap, but check around at some of the online boats parts places and you may find a good price on one.<br /><br />Use extreme caution when disassembling the distributor so as not to damage the rotor. It's an integral part of the distributor shaft and cannot be separated from the shaft without destroying it. This is a VERY expensive part so you want to treat it with care!<br /><br />Check the condition of the 2 ball bearings inside the distributor, if they are rough go to an auto parts store which should stock reasonably priced replacements for both small and big bearing.<br /><br />Replace the snap ring that holds in the bottom bearing; this snap ring is a major cause of destruction of the trigger, when due to corrosion the snap ring breaks, falling into the chopper ring and trashing the entire assy.<br /><br />Best thing to do is get a repair manual, which will show all the steps necessary to do the job. DO NOT remove all the bolts on the flywheel when pulling it, get the correct Mercury flywheel puller or pull only TWO bolts opposite of each other and use a quality automotive harmonic balancer puller.<br /><br />Line up the timing marks as shown in the book, and make sure you note how they appear before taking it apart; this will aid you in lining up the belt drive correctly upon reassembly.<br /><br />HTH and G'Luck...........ed
