Hello all, new here,

I have an 87 bass tracker with a 85hp mercury on it. My question is while the trim range is fine for driving the boat, when I get into shallow water I can not get the motor up high enough or to trailering height. My controls on the throttle on have 2 buttons trim up and trim down. Also, what does the pin running through (under the outboard) control with the 5 0r 6 slots to adjust the pin?

thanks

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,....

How do you trim it to trailer position when you trailer it,..??

If I'm thinkin' of the Pin, you're thinkin' of,...
It limits how far Down the motor can trim under...

thanks Bond-o,
I just trim it up as high as it will go which is by no means as high as I see other trailer boats. It barely will rise enough to be above the bottom of the boat. I need to get shallow to hunt but cant the motor is the only thing stopping me, and cant figure why it has no tilt or trailoring switch

Maybe you motor doesn't have Trailer function only trim. There are some out there that way. For trailering you do it manually.

Having the trim Pin make me think this way on yours.

I wonder why they would make it that way...without being able to raise the motor enough...anyway....how would i go about tilting it manuelly?
Thanks

Re: trim but no tilt?

for most outboards, when the motor is tilted up adn on the bracket, the bottom of the motor is in the water by about 2 inches, which is a little less than what the boat draws when moored and no one is on board. When yours is on the tilt bracket no one is aboard, is yours similar? (I assume you can raise it high enough to get on the tilt bracket).
Or maybe your motor is too heavy for that hull and the whole rig sits too low? Some bass boat rigs really drag at the butt, especially if you are standing in the stern, poling.
If you can't raise it high enough to get it on the bracket, you may have a defective or deficient lift on your tilt. release it and try manually, if so, so see the full range of the motor.

Don't know how you can tilt an 85HP from inside the boat while on the water; way too heavy. But I think everyones real question here is this; if you can't get the motor up high enough for shore line depth, how in the world do you get it high enough to load it on your trailer, and/or use a lower unit support while trailering?

If you have trim you should have full tilt as well. You should simply have to hold the trim button in the up position. Once the motor fully trims it should automatically swith over to the tilt mode and crank that baby up high. My guess is the tilt/trim relay is bad. You might do better on the Ourboard Forum under Mercury.

that makes sense. Where would the trim relay located? We can move the thread if to the mercury board if we need too

My Merc has power trim only. It is advertised for sale that way. With the trim switch I can bring the prop completely out of the water.

This is my take on what is happening. Your motor has a trim limit switch that prevents the motor from running out of the water. The 2-button trim switch on your control is not compatible with the wiring of the trim system and therefore does not allow the tilt function. This can be overcome :)

To comfirm, tell us what type trim system you have. Pump and reservoir in the boat or on the motor?

'Trim' and 'tilt' are the same thing. The only difference is that for 'trim' function the system is limited in it's travel (by the limit switch). If trim is working, then tilt is working, to a point.

If it's a new control box (4000 series I believe), you need to press the UP button harder (you'll feel a second 'click'), that should tilt the engine all the way up....

Re: trim but no tilt?

trim systems are designed so that they will not go much past 15 degrees while the prop is engaged. is it possible that this is your problem?

I used to have a 115 mercury with no tilt or trim!!! lol. I know the feeling. I would take and put both of my feet in the splash well and pull back with all my might. Not an easy task, my dad couldn't do it. They do make a tilting bar that hooks to the top of the motor to give you leverage though.
