Hi folks;
I'm tracing a leak in my transom, and I think I've found a good candidate.
I pulled the trim cylinder connector off the bottom of my transom and found the top of it covered with an inch of gunk. I also found that the gasket was papery and deteriorated, and had some corrosion on top of it.
Here's a pic:
I think this seal is one possibility for what's letting in water in a slow leak... when I had the boat in the water, I could see water coming in the transom and flowing down over the garboard plug hole.
The other possibility is that the Y-pipe has a leaky seal. But I'll deal with that later this fall.
For this repair, is it marginally acceptable to use some liquid gasket or even 3m 5200 to form a seal? I'd just get one of the OEM seals and install it, but the hydraulic lines inside the transom are under some tension, and if I remove them it's going to be nearly impossible to re-connect them.
This fall I'm tentatively planning on removing the engine, replacing the coupler and a couple other things, so I'd probably put in a new gasket then.
Thoughts/recommendations?
Erik
