Trim cylinder connector seal

Hi folks;

I'm tracing a leak in my transom, and I think I've found a good candidate.

I pulled the trim cylinder connector off the bottom of my transom and found the top of it covered with an inch of gunk. I also found that the gasket was papery and deteriorated, and had some corrosion on top of it.

Here's a pic:

I think this seal is one possibility for what's letting in water in a slow leak... when I had the boat in the water, I could see water coming in the transom and flowing down over the garboard plug hole.

The other possibility is that the Y-pipe has a leaky seal. But I'll deal with that later this fall.

For this repair, is it marginally acceptable to use some liquid gasket or even 3m 5200 to form a seal? I'd just get one of the OEM seals and install it, but the hydraulic lines inside the transom are under some tension, and if I remove them it's going to be nearly impossible to re-connect them.

This fall I'm tentatively planning on removing the engine, replacing the coupler and a couple other things, so I'd probably put in a new gasket then.

Thoughts/recommendations?

Erik

Ayuh,....

I'd glue it back together with Anything but 5200,....
After all,... You'll want to take it apart later.....

I would buy the right gasket and cut it in order to slip it past the lines (if you really don't want to take them off). Then use some gasket sealant. Just a suggestion.

Good idea Fish... that'll save much mucking about with goop, and also let me avoid permanent sticking with 5200 as Bond-o mentions.

Sounds like I'm off to the races...
