trim cylinder help

One of the trim cylinders on my Mercrusier is leaking where the tube goes into the front mount. My manual does not indicate how it comes apart or what type of seal is used. Does it screw together like the cap on the rod end.<br /><br />Thanks<br />Tom

Thanks Seaboo2, I tried the link but the drawing is not detailed enough to tell how the end is attached to the outer tube. Mercury sells a tube kit which is the outer tube with the end attached for 70 bucks. I am hoping that the end can be removed. Anyone know if that is possible to do with destroying it.<br /><br />Tom

REPAIR OF HYDRAULIC RAMS<br /><br />1) Remove the NUTS on the ram pins on the side of the bell housing<br /><br />2) Remove the hoses from the rear of the rams.<br /><br />3) Remove oil from cylinders by pushing shaft in and out, aim holes in a safe<br /><br />direction so when oil comes out it does no harm.<br /><br />4) Place ram shell in a vice across the rear pin hole and use a pipe wrench to <br /><br />remove the knurled end cap.<br /><br />NOTE. In salt water some caps become frozen in place. Run a band saw along <br />The tube and cut off a section of the cap to the threads.<br /><br />5) Pull the shaft out of the case and watch for parts, a steel tube should come out<br /><br />with the shaft and a brass floating piston is inside. On the other end of the tube <br /><br />should be an aluminum pressure divider with one small and one large "o" ring.<br /><br />6) Clean all parts and dry with soft cloth.<br /><br />7) Remove the active piston from the shaft, over a white cloth to prevent loss of small parts.<br /><br />8) Sort "o" rings into groups A) The largest "o" ring and the 2 small thin o rings go in a pile with<br />the gold bearing supplied .B) one medium fat and one small fat ring go on the aluminum pressure<br /><br />divider the other fat medium ring goes on the brass floating piston. C) the stiff quad ring goes on<br /><br />the live piston. D) The soft quad ring goes around the brass scraper ring.<br /><br />9) Clean , sand , and lubricate the shaft and put it upright in a vice, place the new end cap over the rod<br /><br />and let it fall down, place the new stainless washer next and then use the new bearing without<br /><br />’o’ rings to push the scraper ring and quad ring down the shaft. <br /><br />10) Remove and place the ‘o’ rings on the gold bearing and slide it over the shaft.<br /><br />11) Replace the active piston with new quad ring on the tip of the rod and tighten with ½ " wrench.<br /><br />12) Slide the lubricated tube over the piston and slide it down.<br /><br />13) Place the new "0" ring on the floating piston and push it into the tube, hollow side down.<br /><br />14) Put the "o" rings on the pressure divider and put it into the end of the tube.<br /><br />15) Slide the new outer cylinder over the whole part and pull the end cap up to the threads.<br /><br />16) Hand tighten the end cap and use pipe wrench with rag to prevent damage.<br /><br />17) Reinstall on boat with rear hose on rear hole fwd hose on fwd hose. Do not think left and right.<br /><br />18) Fill pump tank and run up/down then refill tank.<br /><br /> web page

Tom,<br />The cylinder does Not come apart at the leading end....<br />You need a New 1.....

Thanks for all the help. One last question. The cylinder oil is seeping from between were the outer tube fits into the gimbal end cap. Will replacing the O rings on the forward end of the inner tube solve this. <br /><br />Thanks again <br />Tom

as stated before.... This is Supposed to be One(1) Piece..... The Reason the parts diagrams are vauge is because this part has only 1 part #.... It's a Single Piece.. No O-rings... Your's is Broken... There is No fixing it.... Buy a New Housing.. Or go to ebay,+ Buy another Set of trim rams.... You Should be able to find 2 complete rams for under $100.....<br />NO, O-rings will Not Fix It....<br />You Need a New, or Used Outer Tube.....<br /><br />The"gimbal end cap",+ the "outer tube" are 1(one) Piece.....

Buttanic, Whay year is your Mercruiser????? If it is the early mdl. I have a trim cyl. (the end piece is broken...where it bolts to the prop end of the stendrive (it does screw off here)) that I GIVE you for the cost of shipping.

Thanks Seaboo2<br />The outdrive is a 1977. The leak is not real bad just some seepage. I am trying to see if I can live with it. However if the cylinder you have will work I am interested in it.<br />Thanks,<br />Tom

My cyl is from a 71 (I think the same, I'll look in a day or 2 and double check). Like I said the end that screws off is cracked but the rest is good. When we find if it fits or not I'll get it weighed and we can do the money deal. Like I said I only want shipping covered (it's junk to me, but if it can help someone and save them $, then so much the better)

Well that was easy. Just to make sure we are on the same page. The end on yours that leaks is the end on the right on the above page. Yours does have 2 trim hoses on it.
