I have a DPS-A outdrive but don't know if the trim sender is bad or if the gauge on the dash is bad. When drive is in full down position the gauge sometimes bounces back and forth between full down and partial up as if on a gas gauge position at 1/4 tank.Is there a way to test one or the other for a malfunction?

Re: Trim gauge

Its almost always the sender. You can pull off the sender, disconnect the sender wires and put an ohm meter on them and slowly rotate it to see if the resistance increases steadily. Conversely, you can put a variable resistor on the gauge and do the same thing.

The instructions for testing are in the service manual.

When you do find that its bad, you will find out high the price is on these. Personally, the next time mine fails, it will stay failed.

I was thinking the same thing also. It never read right from day one and it was bought( boat) new.

Thanks

Re: Trim gauge

I just fixed mine. Do you have a hockey puck looking sensor on lower unit. Looking from behind the boatit should be on the legs right side up towards the top. It should have two 10mm bolts. Loosen them up and rotate the puck up and down and see it that moves your trim guage needle (get some help from someone) you have to turn on the key. If it does, then hopefully you have smart gauges??? All you'll need to do it recalibrate you trim gauge. Should fix it right up.

Good luck.
