Trim issue

The down trim switch works great. The up trim or trailer switch only seems to work after I lower it all the way first. Then I can hit the up switch and continue to trailer position. Any thoughts why it has to be lowered all the way first?

Trying to figure it out here: So you lower it all the way down, then hit the trim up switch. Does it go all the way up or up part way then stop. The trailer switch only works when the outdrive is all the way down? If it is all the way down and you hit the trailer, does it go all the way up?

After trimming it all the way down I can trim up. Stop where I want it. Then continue trimming up until it automatically stops. At that point I can hit the trailer button and it will go into trailer position. If I am trimming up, stop and trim down a bit I can't trim up again until I trim all the way back down. The trailer switch only works when I trim it up all the way. The trailer switch will not work when trimmed all the way down, just after I start trimming up.
This makes no sense at all to me.

Re: Trim issue

Me too:confused: OK, the trim kinda works so I suspect that the contacts inside of the switch are worn or dirty and you are losing contact when you go back down a little. You might try taking it apart and cleaning, maybe bend the copper wiper a little to increase contact. If you do make sure you mark everything. For the trailer switch, sounds like a contact problem, but as you say makes no sense. Time to get out the voltmeter. In the stern there are two black wires from the trim limit that go into two connectors. One with a purple white/wire and one with two blue wires. The P/W wire comes from the trim, and passes through the TL switch. One B wire is from the trailer switch and the other B wire goes to the up trim pump relay. You can unplug the black wires and with the voltmeter see if you get 12V at the blue wires when you hit the T button. Try cleaning up the contacts there and at the relay. Just a guess. When you figure it out let us know what it is.

Thanks Terry.. I will follow your suggestions and see what happens. Probably won't get to it until late next week and let you know the results. Dave

Re: Trim issue

Well..... getting to it "late next week" turned into almost 2 months. Vacation, building a shed, lower unit work and good old odds and ends have kept me busy. I found where the 2 black wires connect to the 2 blue wires and the purple wire. If I disconnect both black wires are you saying to test the blue wires with the + and put the - on either of the black to see if I have 12v? Or put the + on the blue wires and find a different ground spot?
