Trim motor or pump???

Howdy all I'm a newby here but here goes..My tilt and trim has been giving me trouble for a while it's a 1978 115 merc , hit the button, just clicks but if you whack it like old chevy starters it works until last night it has a solenoid like a ford which i replaced first made no difference and today i purchased a new motor and resevoir..do i need more parts or will this cure it??? any help appreciated

I've replaced both solenoids on my power trim unit with plain-jane Ford 12V solenoids with not a problem. $7.50 at auto parts store vs. $40 for a 'marine' part. I had to get creative with the mounting, but that was cake. Sounds like you've got all the new parts you need. Check the hoses really well. My '78 hoses were rusted out at the crook of the steel 'elbow' just beneath the threaded fittings beneath the reservoir. Also, I know this is obvious, but it's so easy to mis-thread the hoses, and then you're screwed. Don't go at it blind, and make sure they're threaded correctly the first time. The fittings are aluminum and will cut easily.

i've been all over the Inet today trying to figure this out and have found some people saying i need to bleed the lines after installing new part???? i bought PT440ABN from http://www.maxrules.com/fixmerctrim.html is there a pump to install as well in side of this part from the old one??? i am asumming so...

No, that is the whole unit, pump and reservoir are together. Identical to mine. You will have to bleed the system, because you will remove the hoses from the existing motor, and reinstall them onto the new one. Any time you take the hoses off, you introduce air into the system...gotta bleed it out. It's easy. Bleed screws are located on the cylinders. Follow the steps in any shop manual.
