Trim motor wires?

Could anyone tell me if the 2 wires coming out of the trim motor or both hott? I have a 199 johnson 50hp and the trim unit is going bad..So i bought a used one and want to bench test it..Any help?

The way two-wire trim motors usually work is one wire connects to + and the other to - for one direction, and polarity is reversed for the other direction. This switching is accomplished with relays.

Thanks for your help..Is there any way of bench testing the unit to see if it works ok? How do i know which one is ground and which one is hott?Id like to bench test it before i mount it..Thanks for your help..

on the bench touch one wire to the + battery post and the other to the - battery post...the motor should turn..

if you switch the wires, then the motor turns the other way!!!!!


thats how it has worked with units i have had in hand
