hey guys,
I have a 97 evinrude 115 ocean pro, model: be115sxedr; serial: 04066628. The trim worked great except it had a small leak, wich i have been adding fluid to it before going out. This past weekend i went out and trimmed the motor up and had to take the cover off of it, after putting it back on and starting it, the trim wouldn't work. There is 2 relays that are directly above the botton on the motor, and they kind of click when i push the button down. When i push the botton up, it doesn't do anything. When i take one of them out, it clicks still, and when i take the other one out, it does nothing. Any suggestions? I can post pics if so desired. The wires all seem to be in good shape and the grounds look good too. Another problem is the leak. Just below the trim motor, there is like a 3/4" plastic block that is cracked. I called a local shop, and he said that i have to get an entire motor for $200 because it's all one piece now. All i really need is that plastic block that's between the motor and the valve body assembly. Is it possible to just get that piece, and where?

Thanks in advance
Mike

would pictures help at all? I will try to put some up today... The relays both don't work, if just one of the relays was bad, would the trim still go in one direction?

Re: Trim problem '97 Evinrude 115

another question, what is the best way to get the last bolt out of the trim motor? It's the one on the far left back corner. It almost seems like the motor must be removed to get to it??? please help, i'm thinkin it's probably not the relay now. There is a green and black wire along with the bigger black wire that seems to have wires inside of it. I think the green wire may be disconnected.

anyone?

Will the engine go one way? I'll have to check to see if it is good, but I have that electric motor. It's been awhile since I have worked on one, but I think you can lift the engine all the way up by releasing the manual relief screw, then tye the motor in the up position, and remove the pin at the top of the power trim cylinder. This will let the unit tilt forward to remove that back screw. If the engine will tilt one way, you could turn the relays' around to see if it goes the other.

the engine won't go either direction, i tried unplugging the motor at the clip under the hood(between motor and relay harness) and sent leads to it directly from a battery and nothing happened. There is a green and blue wire that are coming from the harness to motor. The green one appears to be not hooked up to anything? should it be? i don't see where it could have come unattached from but i'm not sure. also, between the wire harness and the motor, the wires have been spliced and have electrical tape around them?? looks like at the splice, there's another wire coming out of it???

i just took that pin out as suggested, and got the last screw out. thanks johnson. I'm guessin the motor is shot... where can i find a motor that i don't have to wait for? The local guy said it will take at least a week to get one here for 200... i was hoping to use it this weekend. Any suggestions? or directions on how to replace it(do's and don'ts

If it's like my motor, those blue and green wires provide power to the trim motor and determine whether it goes up or down. To test the motor, run a lead from the blue wire to the positive side of a battery and the green to the negative side. See if the motor works and which way (if it does), either up or down. Then reverse the leads and see if the motor reverses direction.

Mike, Arco makes a lot of PTT replacement motors. They may have one for your application. The relays switch the polarity of the power going to the motor to make it run in opposite directions. If green gets +12V and blue gets -12V the motor runs in the down direction.

BTW - I replaced a seal in my '98 Johnny V6 PTT unit. The entire seal kit was $50 at a dealer, and contained all the rubber parts (orings, gaskets, wipers) and a few steel parts as well. You might want to look into this angle to fix your leak.

I have that motor in my used parts, it is complete. If interested contact me. I'm not sure if this allowed on this board to sell parts. My no. is 319-240-4764

Re: Trim problem '97 Evinrude 115

thank you all very much for the input. i tried putting wires to the motor from the battery and nothing happened... So I got the motor off and it looks like it's pretty shot. It has extra screws in it and was corroding big time, so i ordered another on that will supposedly be here friday. If that falls through, i may give you a call johnson. I may need some tips on getting it in too, looks like it will be tough getting that wire through everything...
Thanks again, Mike

Mike, When I removed the PTT unit on my '98 Johnny 150, I had to remove the wires from the motor's wiring connector, so they would pass thru the hole in the transom bracket.
