Trim Problem.... Please Help

I got my first boat and took it out for the third time today. The propeller accidentally hitted the rock when I launched the boat. The trim stops working after and the outdrive does not trim up or down anymore. I also notice some smokes came out from the engine compartment between the engine and the hydraulic motor. I also dont hear the trim motor spin anymore. How bad did I damage the trim? Did the trim motor/solonoid burned? How do I go about testing and fixing it? Please any input is much appreciated.

P/S: Just wanna say thanx to Don S. His posts helps alot
Also I have 1985 Searay Mercruiser 350 V8. I believe it is an Alpha

Thanx in advance everyone, Trung

You're going to need to post some pictures so the folks here can see what you're talking about, preferably pictures of any damage to the outdrive, pictures of the trim pump, a description of the make and model of your boat, and also:

* Are any fluids leaking into the boat?
* Does the trim pump run when you hit the button?

If your boat was damaged by hitting a rock with the sterndrive, then folks here need more information to help you out with it. You might consider taking it to a mechanic if you can afford to do so, just to get an idea of what's wrong before you work on it yourself as well.

As I mention above... I have a 1985 Searay I/O Mercruiser 350 V8 GM Block. I believe I did not damage the outdrive... only dings in the propeller because we were able troll at low speed. There is no leak into the boat. I only hear a click when I hit the up button. Thanx again in advance

Re: Trim Problem.... Please Help

Thnx for the link ... I removed the motor from the pump and manually hooked power to the the motor, the motor spins. However, when I put the motor back into the pump, it doesnt spin. Is it because of a bad motor? Can it be fixed? Is it because of bad brushes? field frame? or something else? Please Help... any input is much appreciated....

Is the motor spins freely from the pump because of no load? Does that signifies a bad motor? can we rebuild?

thanx trung

If the motor spins when it is removed from the pump, but doesn't when its in the pump, I think it would suggest either a seized pump, or a blocked hydralic system, if the oil can't circulate in the system it will hydralicly lock the pump.
You say you hit some rocks with the prop, have you checked that the hydralic hoses didn't get crushed when you hit the rocks and now block the hydralic system. I would suggest you try looking at the bottom of the boat where the hydralic lines come out of the transom to see if any damage occured to the hydralic lines.

thanx gary... for the reply... yes we checked the hydrallic lines... they are in good condition... lets say that the pump is hydrallically locked... how do we check for that or fix it?

Hi Trung,

The easiest way is to disconnect the 2 hoses where they come out of the pump. It will then shoot oil if you try to operate the pump, but it will tell you if the pump is seized (nothing will happen) or if it was a hydralic lock (motor will turn and oil will shoot out)..

Now you know if you need a new pump, or if you have a problem with the hydrolic system.

thnx gary again... I will try that tomorrow... also ... could it be weak motor? maybe it is not strong enough to operate the pump when you put a load on the motor. Could that possible contribute to the problem? Any thoughts?

thnx, trung

I really doubt its a weak motor. They don't suddenly become weak and it sounds like it was working fine before your rock strike. Even a weak motor would probably turn a bit.. I really think its a blocked hydralic system.
Hope you find the problem soon.

Re: Trim Problem.... Please Help

Sounds very simple but makes a lot of sense, Gary! ... I tried that today.. and yup no oil shooting out at all... So I decided to get a new motor because that was I suspected in the beginning (faulty motor). Every where I checked, it was around 400 - 1000 for a damn motor. Luckily I found one for $250, re-installed everything and woa-la it works beautifully..... The motor probally shorted somewhere inside the field frame. Also got a new propeller. My wallet is in so much pain right now:D:D:D ... again thnx for the inputs!!!!! MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!

Also does any one have any idea why my RPM gauge remains at 1200 even when I turned the battery off? How do I fix that?

sincerely, Trung

p/s .. next project ... "NEW CONTROL BOX, SHIFT CABLES, TRIM GAUGES....:D:D:D" Gotta work quadruple shifts now ...
