Re: Trim pump oil

Howdy,

It would help if you were a little more specific.

What do you have?

If it's a Mercruiser, you can probably just about use any light oil.
Mercury recommends motor oil or Power steering fluid....
Power Trim System - Quicksilver Power Trim and Steering Fluid, or SAE 10W-30 motor oil
. They don't say NOT to mix either

Volvo has specific recommendations as does OMC......but it's either ATF or "Power Steering Fluid"

The internet is your friend. GOogle works wonders.....

Re: Trim pump oil

i agree that it probably doesn't matter, but i checked my manual for you (not sure what i/o you have).

the manual i checked is for "Sterndrive Units R, MR, Alpha One, Alpha One SS".

for the "OILDYNE POWER TRIM PUMP (WITH PLASTIC RESERVOIR)", it says "Power Trim and Steering Fluid p/n 92-90100A121", then "IMPORTANT: SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 engine oil can be used in system, if Quicksilver Power Trim and steering fluid is not available."

for the "OILDYNE POWER TRIM PUMP (WITH ALUMINUM RESERVOIR)", it says "If necessary, add Quicksilver Power Trim and Steering Fluid or SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 motor oil through fill/vent screw hole to bring level up to ?FULL? mark on dip stick. NOTE: In tropical areas, SAE 30 motor oil can be used."

i don't live in a tropical area, but i've been using sae 30 oil. i'll probably use 10w-30 next time i top it off.

Re: Trim pump oil

If you lived in the northern tier states and you wanted to use your boat in -30 weather, you probably should be using synthetic oil in the trim pump. If you don't have synthetic oil in the drive, it would probably kill the engine everytime you tried to put it in gear!

(never mind the minor fact that all the lakes would be frozen over!! and the block or eng heat exchanger would be frozen solid!!)

So if you were trying to operate in cold climates you'd probably be better off with 10W30 or other lightweight oil (like ATF or power steering fluid.....which are the same thing for this purpose)

Bottom line....it doesn't really matter.....It's just a simple hydraulic pump, valves, filter, and actuator(s).

Ayuh,.... I Do....
A trim pump is about the Simplest hyd. pump ever,...
It'll live Happily with about Any good clean Oil rated between 40w to 10w,...
Closer to 10w is Better,....Syn-oil would be a Waste in My book...
