Here's another question. My boat has a 270 Volvo penta outdrive. There is a switch on the dashboard for raising or lowering the outdrive.I thought it was for when you traier the boat only.Somebody told me I could adjust the motor angle while i'm running to help the way the boat rides. There isn't a guage to tell me the angle of the drive.I can raise it or lower it as much or as little as I want.Is he right or wrong?

Re: trim question

Trebor, He is wrong! The 270 outdrive tilt/trim device is for raising and lowering the outdrive, period. It is designed to drop down(lower) when under power, regardless of the switch or position of the drive prior to movement. It will stay up under power at low speeds as when you are coming to beach or in very shallow water, but it will go back down with any amount of applied thrust. That is the design of the unit so that you do not break expensive parts. Hope this helps.

David

Re: trim question

I was thinking about what you wrote.Does that mean that when I get into shallow water I can raise the engine up if I'm moving slow.

Re: trim question

Trebor,

The vast majority of 270 outdrives have the electric/mechanical tilt, VP doesn't refer to it as a trim because it is to weak to control the outdrive while any force is applied.

It is o/k to raise the leg when beaching only when engine is off, forward motion can cause the tilt to be overridden and force the leg down (and cause damage). In reverse - operating the tilt will disengage the reverse lock and the leg will come out of the water very quickly (also causing damage).

Very few 270s' had hydraulic tilt/trim.

Aldo
.
