Trim sensors

The only thing that I have to take care on my boat project is the wires on the trim sensors are rotted on the inside of boat. I am going to replace the sensors. I can't seem to find them listed on Iboats. How important are they to the operation of the boat? Is it unsafe to run without them?

Its not easy to replace those wires. There is many people here running with out them. The danger to running without them is that you may over trim the drive and stress the u-joints. Its not likely going to happen as a boat will get pretty swirly if you over trim, you will easily notice it. My old boat (1978) did not even have a gauge for trim. This particular boat would make a "howling" sound (prop catching air) when you over trimmed long before the handling would suffer so it was easy to tell.

I recently replaced the switches on my Alpha 1 Gen II, and I can tell you it's a big job, but can be done. I don't know what you have for an outdrive, but on my Gen II, and removed the 6 bolts, and pulled the lower unit, then removed the gimbal housing pivot bolts. Now you can mover the gimbal housing JUST enough to gain acess to the bolt in the very back that clamps the trim wires. cut the old wires, and tape the new wires and pull them through. The biggest PIA of the whole job was re-installing the lock plate and bolt for the grommet that seals and secures the wires to the housing !!! Good luck,

From what I read it seems like it is not going to be an easy job. That is why I was asking how it affects the boat. I would like to do the job over the winter. I want to get some time on the water so I can find out what else it is going to need. I want to make sure I have a good boat before I throw more money in the hole.
Where do I look to find part numbers for the replacements?
It is a generation I outdrive.

They are sold in pairs (sender and limit switch) with wires attached and sealed at the factory. Big Job, may as well buy a transom kit and replace all the bellows and such if it's been sitting for more than a few years.
