I have a 1976 140 hp mercruiser with the 3 button trim system and 1 solenoid for the trim sensor part #89 68258. What has been happening is when I turn the key to the start position I get a "click" and the motor does not start. This click is coming from this trim solenoid. Repeated attempts, the motor will finally start. Does this make sense? I know it's not the starter, because that has already been checked.
Thank you

Verify your connections to the starter and ground. YOu might have some corrosion on the wires making this happen.

This has nothing to do with the trim/tilt......
That click is the slave solenoid.....
You can check it by putting a jumper bridging the two posts on the solenoid (yellow/red wires) & turning the key, if it starts, replace the solenoid.....
You should have 12v+ at one of those terminals with the key in the start position......;)

What he says^^^^^^
Make sure all of your connections are clean & free from corrosion.....;)
If one of the wires that connects to the battery gets hot, it is due to resistance & should be replaced.....;)

Thanks for the quick responses, but now I am more confused! I found in my manual the "slave" solenoid. What I have in my hand is the "trim solenoid". Are they the same? This "trim solenoid" was definitely the one "clicking" when trying to start the engine.

They are different.....
The starter solenoid will be near the starter.....
The trim solenoid is on the trim pump itself.....
The trim is (or should be) wired independantly of the starti/run circuit....
The key should not affect the trim whatsoever.....;)

Ok after looking at it closer, I do have the "slave solenoid" for the starter. Makes more sense now. I will check the connections and test the solenoid. Does anyone know the best place to get a new one? Thank you for all the help.

Napa....
Specify that it is a marine engine, though I'm not sure this is a marine specific part....;)
Check your connections & print Don S's post to keep on your boat....;)

It is a fairly common item - anywhere that sells marine parts should have it.
