I have a 15' old fiberglass bass boat with an old 25 johnson on it. it will come on plane but takes a long time to get up. Tried a a foil and am not pleased by results comes up faster but lose a little top end. Thinking of puting trim tabs on it. is this a good idea for a bass boat? if so looking at the nauticus smart tabs unless someone has other suggestion.
Stainless or composite better?.
Also last question, read that you should have 1" of trim tab for each foot of boat but thier chart shows like a 8"x9" tab i think. is this right or do i need bigger?

Thanks for the help!

Re: trim tab advice

I'm no trim tab expert, but as I understand it, bigger is better as long as it doesn't interfere with the engine. Not knowing your rig, my hunch is that an investment in a few more ponies may be a better investment than trim tabs though.

First make sure that the engine is performing as it should and giving full power, make sure that boat is not water logged, load is balanced and that you are not overloading the boat, then the answer to the question is Smart Tabs are great, they do everything advertised. If you have not been to the website, which I think you have from your post, here is the link: http://www.nauticusinc.com/ also the phone number: 800-233-0194 , tell him what boat and engine combination you have and he will advise you as to the proper tab for your application. Great product with great support.

Re: trim tab advice

Here are smart tabs installed on my 15ft v-hull skiff, also powered by a 25HP 2 stroke.

Mine really helped getting on plane quicker, getting the bow of the boat down and staying on plane at lower speeds. I'd recommend them and their customer support is great. I'm using the 8x9 tabs with 30lb actuators. The 30lb actuators turned out to be a bit much for the 25HP motor I'm running, so I switched to the 20lb actuators, just FYI.
