trim/tilt bleed -- leave fill cap off?

Hi All,

I may have been trying to bleed my trim/tilt the wrong way -- should the fill cap be left off, or replaced each time fluid is added?

Thanks!

I am sure there are others, but most units I have seen are self-bleeding. Just tilt the motor all the way up and fill until it starts coming out. Replace cap and cycle up and down 4-5 times and you're good.

I got that part, but the unit only seems to give a very small range of trim motion and no tilt, so it's not cycling anywhere near through the complete range. Just trying to figure out if that's due to some stupid mistake.

Did you tell us what motor you have? If not, that would be helpful.

Normally you tilt them all the way up. Help it by lifting it with your hand, and lock it up with a manual lock. Now, open the resevoir cap and fill it. Carefully cycle it down and up, and lock it up. Wait a few minutes for any air to bubble out and refill. Repeat until it works well. PTT units usually take auto trans fluid.

Tighten the fill plug before you release the trail lock between each filling, then cycle up and down several times before repeating.

The boat should be as level as possible.

If the manual release was opened, make sure it is re-torqued to specs.

Turns out the problem was a sticking release valve. Replaced the circlip and torqued it down. Works like a champ now!
