I have a 1988 Force 85hp with power trim and tilt. I have replaced the tilt cylinder sleeve, my question is- can I replace the fluid in the trim/tilt unit with mercon transmission fluid? I read somewhere on the internet that this can be done or to use 30 weight SAE non-detergent oil. Which one? Thanks SY

No mate, she'll last the distance. I use transmission fluid as well and after many years the tilt and trim still behaves very well. I just drain and refill it annually.
Ross

Thanks, baboon bum and Ross J. I will try the dextron transmission fluid.

sybarite,

Mercon has many of the same qualities as Dexron. In many applications, they are interchangeable.

If it makes you feel better, at least two of the import outboards recommend Mercon/Dexron for the tilt/trim.

Think about this, an automatic transmission is a hydrualic pump!
