Trim Up....sometimes

Hello everyone.

My trim button on my console dash works. However, the trim up button on the throttle grip does not work (the trim down does). No noise comes from the trim "system", and when I press the trim up botton on grip it makes that clicking (contact) noise (just like when I select trim down).

And ironically, the voltage meter doesn't work either.

Thoughts?

2 quick thoughts:

1. I/O you are already trimmed up all the way for normal trim, and need to push the button further for "trailer trim".

2. And I feel more your issue (due to clicking): the up soleinoid is bad.

Re: Trim Up....sometimes

This happened to me twice with two different boats. In both cases the wiring in the handle broke and lost contact. 3 bonded wires run from that thumbswitch down through the handle and loop around the handle base interior 1 1/2 times and then go through a hole into the inside of the throttle control housing. Right where those wires enter the housing from the handle is a pinch point and after years of throttling back and forth the wires weaken and break. Kind of a pain in the #$$ , but if you are a good backyard mechanic you can disassemble the throttle control and re rig the wiring redneck style or I am sure you can buy that short section of wire harness, maybe. There is barely enoguh room inside the hande to use thin crimp connectors or solder/tape to connect new wiring and run that through. Just make sure you leave a loop of wire around the mounting shaft so it won't bind when you throttle forward or back.

I am not a good backyard mechanic, but my brother is. :D

I figured it maybe wiring - but I didn't want to take it apart without having some idea.

All this happened while being stored. Worked just fine before then - maybe a mouse got hungry (on the wires)? Like they say on this form; BOAT = But only another thousand!

Thanks guys.

Ayuh,... Odds are the wires rotted off the trim limit switch on the drive...

Just by-pass it inside the transom...

I found broken wires in my shifter handle as well... 1990 Bayliner with Morse shifter...luckily , there was plenty of wire in the harness, so I didn't have to add a splice..just pull thru untill good, and solder to switch
