We just replaced the trim motor on my 84 Johnson 140 V4 about a month ago, I did or was having a problem with the switch at the handle on my osm throttle and when we out yesterday in the gulf we took on water from trying to free up our 3rd anchor.
We got back to shore the hull was full of water, which we knew it was pretty bogged down in the rear. I had the wife get up front to get it to plane and had to wait to drain it and the trim worked then. Then we took it down to the Lake to run it around to clean it off from salt water and flush the engine.
The trim switch was acting weird then, the switch which when we turned off the motor because it trimed itself up out of the water i had to kill the motor to keep from burnnign it up, now all the trim wont come back down and all I hear when I press the switch is a huming noise and seems like another noise when I try to trim it up which either one does not work what can I do now? I guess I need anothe OSM Throttle handle with the switch and wire then because I notice it connects into another wire under the Helm then it goes back to the trim motor. I did replace one of the relays about a month ago and there was no need for it cause the original motor had quit, Help please almost everthing else on this motor has been replaced .

Without punctuation, your problem is a little hard to understand. Try swapping the trim relays in the electrical box on the back of the exhaust cover. If the trim goes down, but not up-replace both of the relays (best to replace them in pairs.)

I thought the same thing, thats why I have 2.

At some point its much easier to get the factory manual and go through these problems by the book.
I wonder if its possible to over-extend a tilt unit and have it lock.

follow your trim and tilt harness, take every connection apart and clean and dry them, where are your trim relays located, are they in the engine cowling,I ask ,because, the older engines had trim and tilt electrical inside the boat,Im wondering if you happen to have an older style system. My curiosity is because ,in the newer style all the wiring and relays are inside engine cowling,I then would wonder if you got water inside the engine cowl.Water in the bilge would normally not effect the newer style unless you had a harness extension in the builge that could become shorted from water. All that said.Try and explain where all the t-n-t electrical is located

Yes there is a pump. I found out though the wires were yanked out when a guy did my top half overhall. we sure could of used it the other day Does anyone know if these switches at the throttle are replacable or do we have to buy a whole new arm with the switch and cable with it?

Yes the relays are right above the thermostate area in the rear in a black 4x4 box which I just bought and replaced one about a month ago which ended up being ok after all.
WHen The tnt switch started trimming up and down on its own since the throttle handle was broke and taped with e tape . The switch mount screw inside the throttle handle was broken so everytime I pushed the switch sometimes it would stick, but the other day when we put it in the lake started going out at a idle speed it started trimming on its own then clicking the switch a few times after I took it and the cable out from the throtle handle, then it went up and I had to shut the engine off so I did not blow it up . It seemed like I had no control over it for a few moments . But as I still push the switch button now it makes a noise in the up then another noise when I push the down and nothing happens but you can hear it faintly

also if you follow the wiring up from the tnt motor you will find a blue and green,if you put positive to the blue,eg to green it goes up,think blue sky is up,green =positive down, grass is down

I did check today again I hit the switch and now I know where the noise is comming from, it is comming from inside the black box where the relays are. If I hit the up on the switch one of the relays start humming or should I say buzzing noise and when you hit the down on the switch the other relay makes a simular buzzing sound but different.(so both are buzzing) one of the relays I just replaced about a month ago . Could the salt water that got into the bilge area did something to short out the relays , I dont understand why they are buzzing and my motor is still trimed in the up position. at least I think it hast to be getting power to the relays, there is some corrosion on some of the terminals where connected inside of that black housing but not too bad. any advise as what to do next? Thanks
