14 foot 1974 trihull with 1974 johnson 70hp
i have trouble getting the front end down so i have been toll to trim the motor up, when i do this and give it gas soon the motor drops back down. in the manual it says at 1500rpm a relief valve will automatically open causing the outboard to lower and that the outboard cannot be tilted while operating above 1500rpm. so how would this work to lower the front end at wot

Do I read your note right? You want to trim the bow down to get on a plane? To do this you need to trim the motor down, not up.

BillP is correct...to get the bow down-trim the motor in (closer to the back of the boat) toward the transom. As the boat picks up speed and the bow starts to come down trim the motor out. You may have to redistribute some weight foreward too. Hope this helps! ;)

dont confuse trim and tilt. you mainly use trim when your running to make your boat plane correctly at speed. tilt is what you do when your done for the day and you want to lift your motor out of the water and lock it up. the tilt also allows you to run over 20 degrees trim (the maximum trim more or less) at slow speeds (aka less then 1500 rpm) the tilt motor is not designed to run at high speeds. the trim and tilt can be one two or three cylinders but after trim is maxed out at 20 degrees, it kicks into tilt and the servo protects it.

this enough info?

You have to move the tilt pin to a hole closer to the boat to get the bow down.
Whoever told you to trim the motor up to get the bow down was wrong.

BTW are you having trouble getting the bow down at al speeds or just at lower speeds?

Re: trimming won't stay up

most likely you have both, my 200 has one button. From all the way down, when I push the up button, it trims until it reaches 20 degrees up, at which time it goes into the tilt mode, (you can usually tell because it rises much faster) . because the tilt is geared differently to raise the motor faster, it cannot take the pressure of a motor going over a few knots, so the put a limiter in the way of a solinoid that monitors how fast your going (rpm's) and if you are in tilt mode, the solinode opens, allowing fluid to pass until the motor is down to at most 20 degrees.

my problem is that my solinode slowly leaks, so that when i am running properly trimed, the engine keeps going down (very frusturating)

the do sell tilt only tilts as well as trim only trims, but ive never seen one.

if your engine cane be raised all the way by your "devise" and during the first few inches or so it seems like its raising slowly , then i would say you have trim as well.

besides, you qouted your manuel as saying it had a 1500 rpm limiter
