Triple guard grease or gasket sealing compound?

Hello,
I'm in the process of replacing the gimbal bearing (which was stuck on the shaft bty) and other seals on the lower unit.
In the Seloc book it says in one chapter to use triple grease for the propeller shaft, and on another chapter it says to use gasket sealing compound. Which one to use?
Same thing in the lower unit about the o-ring 0318717 for the bearing housing. The book says to use triple guard, and it looked like there was sealing compound on the o-rings when I opened it. So what can be used?
Is it safe to use the sealing compound on o-rings? doesn't it kinda dry in the long run?
On a side note, the shifting was impossible. The sifting rod would not budge because the wiper was coming apart. I wonder how many hard to shift problems can be caused by that now I encountered it.

In the OMC book I have it states to use sealing compound (I used Permatex Form-A-Gasket) on all gaskets and O-rings in the outdrive. I did just that on my 3.0 litre cobra. It doesn't dry out.

For some reason I can't edit my post but I also wanted to tell you to get rid of the Seloc book and purchase an OMC service manual.

Triple guard on the prop shaft and the driveshaft splines and OMC gasket sealer on the gaskets and bolt threads. On o rings not really needed except on the water passage one and the impeller housing one. I actually find that triple guard holds those in place better when re assembling.
