Re: Trolling Motor Protection

To determine what the circuit breaker current should be, look at the old one. You must measure the operating current and compare to circuit breaker current to determine if there is a problem....Operating current should be no more than approx.70% of rated breaker current.

Do you feel it has nothing to do with an under-powered trolling motor for my size boat?

Re: Trolling Motor Protection

Just got home a while ago, and went outside (at 20 degrees) and pulled the breaker that wasn't working off the battery. Brought it inside where my 4 eyes with bifocals could look at it better, and it is a 40 amp breaker, with a reset pin on the side. I couldn't see that before until you all mentioned it. Pushed the button, and now I can read through it with a meter. Wish it wasn't 20 degrees, or I'd go fishing tonight and try it out.
Thanks to all of you for your help with this problem.

Also, the breaker is called a "short stop". :)

I sorta figured you had a reset on there. Schematic, do you think my circuit is being tripped do to an underpowered trolling motor. Posted the specks previously. Your advice is appreciated. I will not get the chance to test the amps until this weekend, but still plan on doing so.

495V - like Schematic said earlier, it it has tripped a lot, it could have weakened. They told me the cost for the Short Stop was anywhere from $7.95 to $8.95. For that price (probably one of the cheapest things on a Bass boat), I would replace it. I'm not an expert, but would think that a 50 lb thrust would be big enough for your boat. The old ranger I had only had a 45, and never had any problems, but it was 3 feet shorter than your boat. Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like you are already convinced. If your like me though, just need to convinvce "momma" that your toy needs something else. I've looked at the drift socks, and in theory, think they work great. Think I saw them as cheap as $15.00 on E-bay - made from Air Force nylon. Would probably be good to hold the boat, and as easy or easier than trying to mess with an anchor. ;)

Yeah, I think I will replace it but I'm just wondering if I will continue to have this problem even after. I feel the motor is underpowered, especially because my boat is always full of alot of gear and I normaly have myself and two other guys in the boat. I was thinking about one of the new genesis' over 100 lbs thrust. Looking at the new bass boats, most of them my size come with 76 or greater. I'm probably overpowered with that, but I sometimes struggle trolling with my i/o because of to fast a speed and thought maybe the trolling motor would work. I'm sure I'll go through my batt. quick but I very seldom troll and when I do it's for short periods of time. Somebody told me to get a drift sock or even tie two 5 gallon buckets up and drag them. Sounds a little silly. I

Re: Trolling Motor Protection

Your right, I tried convincing her last summer with no luck. Maybe I will leave the circuit for now and next time I take her out, make it trip, and then proceed to tell her it's broken. LOL Actually, I figured my electric is still in good shape and why just dump it. If I could get some cash for it, I would definately upgrade, but I don't know how the used trolling motor market is and what a fair price would even be. The gentleman that owned my boat put more hours on the electric fishing (fishing electric only lakes) than anything else. It appears to be the most worn piece of equipment on the thing.

Hey guys I have a 76lb thrust on my Ranger and at high speed it will get crazy. You have to realy watch that foot control. Nothing worse then a high wind and fighting it plus a trolling motor.

My Ranger is a 95 with a 150 evn intruder on the back. I bougt it used last Jan for $9500 and think I got a great deal. Does that sound about right? It was garage kept and in great shape.

Re: Trolling Motor Protection

What length is your Ranger? I only have a 50lbs thrust on my 21'8" Ranger and it's a heavy boat with an I/O 350 mercruiser in it. I definately need to upgrade to at least a 76. Sounds like you got a good deal on yours. Just bought mine used last year. It's a 96' commanche 495v w/ a 350(270hp). I paid $16000 and it looks like it just came off the showroom floor. I had to scrub the blue die off the white walls when I bought it. Blue booked out at $19500 with the trailer. I love it and will probably own it until it falls apart, hopefully never happens.
