What output trolling motor would be needed to move an 18' twin toon? And considering some of the rivers we frequent have anywhere up to a 5 knot current we would need to take this into consideration.

I would go with a 55# 12 volt motor. It should be plenty to move an 18'er around..

I have a 80#, 24V trolling motor on a 22' tri-toon that'll move it along at about 2.3 mph. It was a windy day, so I may be off a bit, but that'll give you a rough idea.

Re: Trolling motor size for 18' Toon

I have a 55# 12 volt on my 20 footer and it does everything I need it to do. However, I'm on a small (500 acre) lake and I use it to troll along weed beds and to position the pontoon so my wife can fish her favorite spot from her favorite chair:) I'm pretty sure it will get me home if I have a problem with my motor. On calm water it does fine. Once it gets the boat moving it moves along fine but into a head wind it slows down quite a bit. Don't know what a 5 knot current would do. Add a little wind to a 5 knot current and I don't think my 55 #er would be enough.

Yup, 55 is the biggest you can get in 12 volt and that should certainly be enough to get you sround, even with current.

I have a 55 lb Motorguide on my 16' aluminun fishing boat and it will move right out and the newr trollers are pretty gentle on batteries.

Thye other cansideration is shaft length, get the longest you can, remember, in a wake the boat can bob a foot or more out of the water.
