Recently purchased a 1990 Starcraft SS160 with a 60HP Merc Main. Now I have to outfit the boat with a long shaft trolling motor.

Looking for anyone with insight as to what size do you think would be ideal.

This boat will primarily be used as a lake boat trolling for trout.

Friends have told me that 5 or 6hp would be sufficient but I see alot of talk about the 8 or 9.9 size.

Thanks for any help...

JohnnyRude 5 or 6HP twin should do the job well.

For just trolling anything from 6 to 15 will work well. Look for the best motor (condition) in that range you can find, stick with a major brand from the 80's to current and you'll be fine.

WOW all the way up to a 15HP???

I used to have an older 7.5 Honda 4 stroke but had to put a trolling plate onite since I couldnt get it to troll slow enough.

I like to troll flies and rooster tails alot so I'm hoping to find something that can troll wayyyyyyy down.

Many 9.9s and 15s are the same basic motor and there's no real difference when used for trolling, so either one works fine.

Going slow enough isn't really an issue with most 2 stroke twins, sometimes it is with 4 strokes though. If you do have a problem, just get a different prop or have yours modified, its cheap and easy. First try just turning the idle down though.
