Trolling motor will not turn

Got this trolling motor from a friend who has given up on it. I'm about to, but just can't. Details: Motorguide Bill Dance Signature Ed. Model # BD1230, 30# Thrust, 1995 Brunswick. It has 12V to the plug, 12V after the plug, 12V at the foot pedal and 12V to the head. I can't get the motor loose to test there, but it does have continuity after the head. The prop will not turn manually or otherwise and when I put power to it the motor and about 6 inches up the shaft get warm fast. Any and all help is appreciated. Anyone willing to inform my wife I need a new trolling motor for Christmas is greatly appreciated!

Re: Trolling motor will not turn

Hi there mikreb. You might want to go ahead and notify the wife :D .

Sounds like your motor windings are shorted out and siezed. You may be able to loosen it up with some mineral oil, but if you can't turn it by hand it may be too far gone. Was this motor submerged? Not worth the effort in my opinion. Even if you get it spinning, it will be an energy hog. Good luck, others may have a solution for you. Also, welcome to iboats!

DR

Mikreb, do you know you can unscrew the hub & take off the prop to check for obstructions like fishing line or hydrilla? I had mine for a year before I discovered that - worked a lot better afterward.

jtw

Thanks drowned, thats about what I figured. The hub behind the prop was clean & clear, no obstructions. Thanks for the advise ...

I've been reading on the bb for about a week, its a wealth of info, thanks to all who contribute.
