Trolling Motor Wiring

I have a Scout 175 Sportfish that I would like to add a trolling motor to. The boat did not come with the trolling motor receptacle and I was wondering the best way to install this and run the wires back to the battery/center counsle. I know this boat is filled with foam, and was wondering the best way to get around or through this. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Trolling Motor Wiring

Are you intending to wire the troller to the single battery for the engine or are you adding a second, deep cycle. If you are connecting to the starting battery, that would be a huge mistake as it will surely leave you stranded with a dead battery. Adding the receptacle is a matter of finding a location up front that you can get wiring back to the console and wiring it to the troller battery.

I will be adding a second battery. I guess I was wondering if anyone has any experience running the wires through the foam and what is the best way to do that. By theway this is the first time I have owned/ worked on a fiberglass boat. Thanks

There is usually a place to run the wires in a conduit or simply up under the gunnels. Sometimes it takes creative thinking but you can do it. Going through the foam seems like a pointless task to me- never tried it.

Other options are to run under the floor in plastic conduit.

Either way I recommend using huge wires- check your motor's manual but I would use at least something as big as 6, but I have seen some run 8 gauge. Bigger wire however has less resistance. However I have a tendency to use way over-rated wire :eek:for a task at hand.
