We just baught our first boat, a Bentley Pontoon 24' fishing model. We live on a small lake and plan to only use it there (it will be docked in the lake) I was wondering what size trolling motor would work best. A local shop had a Minn-Kota 55# Powerdrive with 54" shaft on clearence. So we got it. Is this going to be enough motor? We don't plan to take the boat onto a river. Should I keep the motor or take it back for a larger, 24-volt model?

Any help is appreciated

Howdy, HOL.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The 55 should move your 'toon around nicely in relatively still water with little wind.

Will it be enough? Depends on what you expect.

Good luck. :)

i had a 36lb thrust that worked well on a 24 footer and i fished in current, on a river. just keep your battery or batteries charged. you might wanna run it off of 2 875 mca's from wal mart. run it in parallel, +-+ - to -, this should give you the added oomph to tow that.

55# is just below the minimum thrust recommended for your size boat, but if you are on a small lake with no tidal flow or currents and little wind you should be OK. No sense spending money on a motor if you're satisfied with what ya got now.

I'm not sure if I"m happy with it yet. I guess I'll be using it to cast some docks. We do get some decent winds out here. But anything over 25 MPH, we don't go out. ( and we usually use the wind to push us.) I just don't want to open it up, then not be able to return it. Thanks for the input.

Kent (The Husband)

I have a 20ft. Voyager and that is the trolling motor I have. Its does fine for me except in very stiff wind (+20 mph). I bought a WalMart Trolling Battery and it will last all day if I dont run it wide open. I use mine for same purpose that you intend to. Good Luck.

I have a 25' pontoon, and I think the 90HP merc could be bigger. I would just make sure the trolling motor batteries, and the starter battery are separate.
