89' 4.3 liter Merc....found one exhaust shutter laying in the exhaust boot. So looked up the part number and verified it cause the broke shutter had the PN stamped in it. Old PN14348. Superceded up to 807166A 3. OK...got them. Problem is they don't fit. The new ones are of a "new" design and have two flaps instead of one. The assembly won't go down deep enough to clip into the pin holes in the exhaust pipe. Am I doing something wrong here or is the PN's messed up.

Thanks as always for the help.

Jim

That is the proper shutter.
Make sure you have all the corrosion cleaned off the Y pipe, and they will fit. Even a little twist will throw them off.

Thanks Don...I'll give it another try in the morning. The exhaust pipes are exceptionally clean and I would have thought that they would slip right in. Even measured the distance from the edge of the pipe to the pin hole....1 1/8" to center....the new shutter measures 1". Maybe I ain't holdin' my tongue right....I don't know. I'll let ya' know what happens.

Thanks again.

Jim

I've had alot of trouble getting those dang things seated. If you notice the flappers will not move freely until the nub is in the hole. I usually end up using a rubber hammer and a dull punch to tap them on each side until they finally pop out into the holes and the flappers will be free to expand and contract
