My 1994 225 Yamaha Saltwater Series is a real problem re-starting after the motor is used for about 15 minutes and turned off. No problems with initial start, one crank and it goes.
When I attempt re-start, the ignition is cranking and I have to play with the throttle to get it going. The throttle is almost full forward before it slowly and painfully starts. It takes me 5 or 6 tries. It's getting worse. Once started, it purrs. Troubleshooting I've done: cleaned plugs, changed one leaky fuel pump, and changed out several leaky gas lines.
I've got full towing insurance coverage but really don't want to use it, especially with wife and kids onboard. Standing-by for your suggestions..thanks..Oko

I just fixed a somewhat similar problem although it is possible yours is different. Mine turned out to be a fuel supply problem. It is either fuel or ignition. First notice if when it is turning over if the tach is reading anything. If not, it may be electrical in nature.

I replaced fuel pumps on the engine, the entire fuel filter/water seperator assy and filter, bulb, a bit of hose, added a marine electric booster pump with another filter, and finally the check valve where the fuel comes out of the tank with a simple hose fitting. The last $2.00 part appears to have been the ultimate problem. The boat ran better today than it ever has in about 2 years of messing with it. Now it will actually run and idle without the booster pump even working.

The reason it won't start after running about 15 mins. is still a mistery to me. However, I am just thankful that it went away.

One cause of the problem on that model was the fuel pump used in the primer circuit. If it leaks it will drain off the carb and make it hard to start. A way to test is to block the line coming out of the carb bowl to the primer pump. If you warm up the motor first, then disconnect and block the line. Pump the bulb again to fill the bowl up and if it starts fine, reolace the pump. Do not rebuild the pump.

Arnold96...Examined and changed out those items similar to what you did and still have the problem. Did find the check valve connection less than optimal, was allowing air to be sucked in..I've got a tight fuel system now..Haven't tried all suggestions yet..Thanks..Oko

Ray Nuedecker..Haven't tried your suggestion yet. Two graduations kept me busy. Will attempt this week...I don't understand why this wouldn't be an issue on original start up. That is never a problem...?..thanks for the suggestion, will let you know how it goes..Okie

Good chance that if you reprimed with the bulb after running and sitting it would start easier then. Not something we are accustomed to doing, even though it is almost automatic on first start to do so.

If you can remove the check valve, after drying it out, try sucking air through it. If it feels the least bit restrictive, toss it and replace it with a simple nipple connection. The check valve in the primer bulb should be sufficient to keep the gas from draining out of the fuel system if it is any good. I took mine out again this weekend, and even the 15 min wait had no effect and it ran perfectly. The part in question is only about $3.00 and you can always put the chackvalve back in if it does not work.
