I'm a decent amateur mechanic starting from near zero with outboard motors. I need to remove the flywheel from my 1993 Force by Mercury 150 HP two cycle outboard. I have the factory shop manual, but I've encountered a problem that is not covered. ... The manual describes the steps to removing the flywheel as (1) Remove the big nut in the center of the flywheel (done), and then attach the special pulling tool to the three threaded holes near the center of the flywheel. I've seen pictures on the web of flywheels that look like that, but mine doesn't so far. Here's what I'm seeing:

I'll describe it this way. There is a heavy piece with teeth around the circumference for the starter to engage. I assumed this is the flywheel. Above it is a round metal plate that is attached to the heavy piece with eight bolts. When I couldn't find the three threaded holes for the puller, I assumed they were under the metal plate and attempted to remove it. I removed the eight bolts and a large snap ring at the center. The plate separated from the heavy piece a little, but I then discovered that the plate is firmly attached to the crankshaft while the heavy metal piece wiggles freely. So I don't know what to do next to either reveal the three threaded holes or remove the flywheel in any other way. Knowledge and suggestions will be deeply appreciated.
